We’ve Been Together for 6 Months. Is it Too Soon to Say ‘I Love You’?

Helen from Calgary asks… Lavalife Ask the Expert

I dated a guy for 2 years and he left me because he fell out of love for me. I’m now with a really sweet guy who’s been so awesome to my friends and family. We’ve been together for 6 months. I almost feel like I’m already closer to him than my ex of 2 years. Is it too soon to drop the L-word? He’s only been in one long term relationship and it lasted just shy of a year…I don’t wanna scare him off.

Dear Helen,

I am overjoyed to hear that you are happy and in love; it’s hard to come back into the dating scene after a hard break up.

This is a tough question because every couple is different and there really is no perfect time to drop the “L-bomb.” It holds different meanings for different people, and some people may have bad memories from their past surrounding this open confession of love.

I like to be cautious, especially when you really like the person you are with. Now don’t let this scare you, because you know your man better than I do, but I think when it’s the right time, you will know.

You could also let him be the first to say it out loud. This way, you aren’t risking anything, because you already know how you feel and you will be confident when you say it back.

If either of these doesn’t work, I think a safe bet would be to tell him on a holiday, or your 1-year anniversary. If he truly is a good and sweet guy, he will let you know how he genuinely feels and not want to lose you.

Good luck with the progression of your relationship.

Warmly,

Lisa
