I Met a Guy But he Doesn’t Speak my Language. Could it Ever Work?

Holly from Dorval asks… Lava365 Ask the Expert

I’m English speaking but living in Quebec for work. I’ve met a gorgeous guy and have gone on a few dates with him, but he speaks almost only French and communication is definitely a problem. If we don’t speak the same language but there’s a spark, is there any hope for us? I’m going to French classes for my job which will help me a bit, but it’s a problem right now. Help!

Hi Holly.

Well the good news is that body language is the universal language of love.  In fact, upon first impression and getting to know someone, 90% of communication is nonverbal so what you say is not necessarily as important as the signals that are presented.

So, when two people have chemistry such as with this man you are describing, it can totally be “on” with or without the same language.  This can cause an intoxicating reaction!  In terms of whether or not there is hope for a future relationship depends on many variables.  The first thing to consider is what it is you desire and are ready for.  You are only in the courting phase of the relationship and really just met so see how things unfold.

Consider factors such as cultural values, your family systems, thoughts around money and your alignment in relationship goals.  Even if you spoke the same language, I would still advise you to have fun and get to know one another before making plans for the future.  It could be very sensual and exciting getting to know one another in a different kind of way so see how it plays out.

Good luck and keep us posted!
